D.A.D.S.

D.A.D.S. mission statement:
To assist and support, through fellowship and action, the fathers and families of individuals with Down Syndrome.
Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome, or D.A.D.S., is an organization of
fathers of children who happen to have Down syndrome. We hesitate to
call our self a “support group”, even though we do, in many ways,
support each other. We prefer to think of D.A.D.S. as an “action group.” Check out the national website of D.A.D.S.
 I
have known about D.A.D.S. for more than a year but have had too many
other things on my plate to persue forming a chapter in Connecticut. In
March I realized that I wasn't getting any younger and my son, Stephen,
was getting older by the minute and was already three! He wasn't a baby
any more, but a cute toddler that has his daddy wrapped around his tiny
little pinke finger. I had made it to the "Appreciation" stage of a
father of a child with Down Syndrome and made room on my plate to form
a local chapter of D.A.D.S.
So I contacted Joe Meares, the founder of the
national chapter located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and got as much
information as possible. I approached the board of Directors of the
Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress with the idea of forming
Connecticut's own chapter and got overwhelming support from them.
There are 3 other fathers with children that
have Down Syndrome that we have come to consider family. So I
approached them, and put a shout out on the CDSC's list serve. Which
got me a group of about 10 other men that have expressed interest in
forming a chapter in Connecticut. We have met twice so far and
currently meet at Pat's Kountry Kitchen in Old Saybrook, which is in
the middle of most of the interested fathers.
Join us on the 3rd Thursday of the month
starting at 6:00 p.m. and help us grow Connecticut's chapter of Dads
Appreciating Down Syndrome.
